چکیده
Received June 6, 1994, and in revised form October 20, 1994. Expanded version of the Retiring Presidential Address presented to the annual meeting of the Association for Symbolic Logic at the University of Florida, Gainesville, March 7, 1994. Material from this paper was also presented in lectures to the Fifteenth Annual Wittgenstein Symposium in Kirchberg am Wechsel, Austria, and at the University of Rochester and the University of California, Berkeley. I wish to thank each of these audiences. I am especially indebted to David Braun, Hans Burkhardt, John Carriero, Cheryl Dawson, Erin Kelly, John Rawls, Gila Sher, Wilfried Sieg, W. W. Tait, Guglielmo Tamburrini, Hao Wang, and the referee for their comments and assistance. Wang and my fellow editors of Gödel’s works, Solomon Feferman, John Dawson, Warren Goldfarb, Robert Solovay, and Sieg have taught me much of what I know about Gödel’s thought. Unpublishedwritings ofGödel are quotedbykindpermissionof the Institute forAdvanced Study. The last revisions of the paper were made when the author was a Fellow of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, with the support of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Their support is gratefully acknowledged. Russell [19, page 356].

Beautifying Gödel
The incompleteness theorems of Kurt Gödel [1931] are considered to be among the most important results of mathematics. They are regarded as “deep”, and they strongly influenced the course of modern mathematics. They are popularly thought to prove the limitations (or even futility!) of mathematical formalism. At any rate, they deserve to be presented as simply, as elegantly, as beautifully as po...
متن کاملThe impact of the incompleteness theorems on mathematics
In addition to this being the centenary of Kurt Gödel's birth, January marked 75 years since the publication (1931) of his stunning incompleteness theorems. Though widely known in one form or another by practicing mathematicians, and generally thought to say something fundamental about the limits and potentialities of mathematical knowledge, the actual importance of these results for mathematic...
متن کاملGödel's Incompleteness Theorems: A Revolutionary View of the Nature of Mathematical Pursuits
The work of the mathematician Kurt Gödel changed the face of mathematics forever. His famous incompleteness theorem proved that any formalized system of mathematics would always contain statements that were undecidable, showing that there are certain inherent limitations to the way many mathematicians studies mathematics. This paper provides a history of the mathematical developments that laid ...
متن کاملThe Place and Influence of Intuition in the Creativity of the Architecture Designing Process
The work of architecture is believed to depend on the governing thought in the process of architectural designing. This thought can be analyzed, developed, experienced, and interpreted. Creativity is the only domineering force in the idea of designing which is in quest for freeing architecture from the routine methods, and also finding the novel systems to answer the questions in architecture. ...
متن کاملJust what is Full-Blooded Platonism?
Mark Balaguer has, in his Platonism and Anti-Platonism in Mathematics [Balaguer, 1998], given us an intriguing new brand of platonism, which he calls, plenitudinous platonism, or more colourfully, full-blooded platonism. In this paper, I argue that Balaguer’s attempts to characterise full-blooded platonism fail. They are either too strong, with untoward consequences we all reject, or too weak, ...
